As in heaven as on earth
The work of Julio Campos between new scientific research, The meaning of nature and the perception of the unconscious.
Those who are familiar with contemporary culture are well aware that artists in the first decades of the twentieth century, as now, were deeply influenced by new theories of psychoanalysis, as well as other factors such as the birth of photography, the challenge toward bourgeois culture, the influence of Japanese art, etc. However, another key aspect to understanding contemporary art is in connection with research in the field of nuclear physics, which have destroyed the dogma of the absolute concreteness of the basic particles of matter. Matter is then shrouded in mystery. Consequently we are witnessing a revolutionary change in the conception of reality that goes beyond the traditional view of the natural world governed by the laws of classical physics. These new interpretations in the field of physics and astronomy on the cosmos, and of that which surrounds us has been crucial to the artistic avant-garde of the early twentieth century and the more recent artists, who have directed their research towards abstraction and bidimensionality and introspection in the unconscious. Contemporary artists have tried to give visible form to life beyond appearance. Their works are a symbolic representation of a world that exists beyond the consciousness, an imaginative world based primarily on the relativization of absolute certainties of our empirical culture, and are a source of reflection on the semantic value of existence. The work of Julio Campos between new scientific research, The meaning of nature and the perception of the unconscious. Contemporary artists have tried to give visible form to the life beyond appearance Portal Clockwork Pulsar These premises are in the artistic research of Julio Campos, Madrid artist, currently living in London after a successful academic background and work experience as artist designer made in both Madrid and Edinburgh. In Edinburgh Julio Campos received the commission in 2003 of illustrating the cover and the images contained in the book of Maryel Gardyne, The atom and the Octave, whose ideas deeply inspired the artist to release its current graphic and sculptural works series called Thread Portals. Threads Portals are a symbolic access to the mystery of the universe and the secret correspondences that govern it. Art continues to help us to decipher the mysteries of our existence, the secrets of the universe and the various activities hidden behind the apparent aspect of things. Thread Portals therefore symbolically expresses the different levels of perception of reality and its multiple dimensions. Each piece of this ‘portal’ is an attempt to depict the energies of these meanings, which are difficult to reach, except through a voyage of insights that emerges from the depths of his psyche. These artworks are made by the act of puncturing the canvas followed by the embroidery of threads. They reveal the secrets of the universe enclosed by invisible plots perceived by the artist. These models are twisted in time and space, where each thread has its own internal resonance and a different vibration that absorbs the viewer into a hypnotic trip through different sizes and states of mind.
Julio Campos perceives through his compositions a universe that vibrates at different frequencies and with some of which, humans are able to tune in. These frequencies, therefore, are also expressed in sounds, created by the different length strings, and are relevant in his work the same way in which the sound has a physical impact on us and what surrounds us. Through the series of Thread Portals, Campos intends to create harmonic patterns able to make us perceive and explore the symphony cosmica.Thread portals are therefore portals of access to a cosmos harmonically and rhythmically balanced, cyclically divided into 12 parts that show correspondences with the Zodiac, with the months, seasons, hours and minutes. The colours and frame of mind of this series are constantly changing depending on the light conditions.
In the series Thread Portals, Julio Campos arises in the context of postmodern thought aimed at deconstructing the traditional culture, which contrasts with the multiple meanings of reality and existence, this is inspired by the cosmos, planets and the mystery of the unknown. Nevertheless, the most intense and profound meaning of existence has been recognized in the stars since the most remote times. From the past, the great civilizations have felt the need to define graphically and allegorically the ‘turn’ of the sky. Threads Portals therefore symbolically express the different levels of perception of reality and its multiple dimensions Portal Concave 1 The observation of the sky has motivated civilization for thousands of years and the great bond between astrology and the visual arts is justified by the human need to express himself through signs and symbols. Even in recent times the ancient cosmogonic theories have acquired a new meaning constituting a key tool to analysis of the human psyche as it happened to the psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung. He was the first to recognize the great potential of astrology as a tool to explore the depths of the human psyche, combining the signs and planets of astrology symbols of archetypal processes that had their origin in the collective unconscious. Thus also the old theories of the cosmos allow us to currently understand how the human tendency is to unconsciously transform shapes and objects into symbols that are expressed through the visual arts and religion. In contemporary times modern painting and sculpture themselves constitute a symbolic expression of the psychological condition of human beings. As can be deduced, the work of Julio Campos fascinated by these ancient cosmological traditions, and the circles depicted in his Thread Portals also should be interpreted as a kind of Jungian archetypal symbol, is a symbol of that instinctive desire of the human being towards the fullness and the integrity of life. Reconnecting more closely, Thread Portals to the human interest to the cosmos, the circle is a symbol much more expressive and universal. In fact, it expresses the totality of the psyche in all its aspects, including the relationship between human beings and the entirety of nature. The circle symbol indicates an essential aspect of life, its total and definitive whole. The research of spatial orientation can symbolise the need psychic guidance and the union of opposites. Examples of circular representations can be found in the history of art and architecture, becoming the symbol of a whole psyche but in modern times the circle is no longer depicted as a single entity that dominates the composition, in many cases it is asymmetrical rims that reflect deep laceration of the values of our culture, now devoid of roots and threatened by the danger of dissociation. In the series Thread Portals, Julio Campos investigates the contemporary spin-off of this symbolic representation and the ability to re-establish a new harmony through the exploration of the mystery of the cosmos. The circle symbol indicates an essential aspect of life, iits total and definitive whole.
